Bring Forth

"If you bring forth what is within you,
what you bring forth will save you.
If you do not bring forth what is within you,
what you do not bring forth will destroy you."
~~ Gospel of Thomas

Many interpretations are given for the above verse.
One is that it points to the divinity of man,
so if one does not realise that Man is in fact divine,
he will not live well.

This is not orthodox Christianity as orthodox Christians
believe that only the Triune God, and angels, are divine.
Hence, as we all know, the Gospel of Thomas
is not considered Biblical canon.

Still, it is not impossible for orthodox Christians to agree with this verse,
because Luke 17:21 says, "The kingdom of God is within you."

If 'what is within us' is interpreted loosely as 'the kingdom of God',
then this verse can be accepted and even appreciated by orthodox Christians.
We should obviously bring forth the kingdom of God.

I interpret it more metaphorically as one's individual talent, his calling.
If he does not fulfill his calling, he will be destroyed.
This falls in line with another verse from The Gospel of Thomas:
"Do not do what you hate."
In other words, doing what you love is the most important thing
in the world, and that will be fulfilling your calling.
Not fulfilling your calling will be the greatest sin.

Still, there are other parts of the Gospel of Thomas
that are impossible to either understand or agree. Example:

"I am the light that is over all.
I am the All. The All come forth from Me.
And to me the All has come.
Split a piece of wood - I am there.
Lift the stone, and you will find me there."

This hints at the Hindu concept that All is One.

The name 'Thomas' was given a bad reputation
because the canonical Gospel of John depicts
a 'doubting Thomas' who needed to feel
Jesus physically to be convinced of his resurrection.

It is not certain if the Thomas who wrote this ancient document
was the same 'doubting Thomas'.
The author himself claims to be 'Didymos Judas Thomas',
which means 'twin brother'.
The name itself is a metaphor that the author uses
to identify with Jesus as his twin brother.
This implies that we can all be 'One' with Jesus
if we know ourselves and our calling.

It is time for me to fulfill my calling.
I have waited too long.
In fact, I might be already be too late.

Logos

"In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God,
And the Word was God."

~~ Gospel of John 1:1

Even when I was an orthodox believer, this first verse of the Book of John,
considered the most mystical of all gospels, always stumped me.
Some interpret the Word as the Bible,
but this is arguably wrong since the Apostle John
only knew the Old Testament when he was writing.
And the Old Testament can't be the Word
because it wasn't even written yet when the world was created.
It also can't be our current Bible - Old + New Testament,
simply because John couldn't have known that his gospel
was going to be part of the accepted canon.
Even if he knew prophetically that what he wrote
would be recognised, it still wouldn't make sense
because our Protestant Bible - 66 books -
didn't exist before the creation of the world.

Some would disagree. "God has already known in his mind
- even before the creation of the world -
what the 66 books would be," they would argue.

But here's the question - how do we know that
the 66 books in his mind are the same 66 books
that we have now? If fact, how do we know the number is 66?
I came from the Protestant tradition, but I feel
we need to spare a thought for our Catholic brothers.
What does God think about the Apocrypha?

If you're Muslim, then the argument goes on.
God was thinking of the Quran before the creation of the world.
There should only be One Holy Book, with 114 chapters.
So the question will always be:
How do you know that the Word of God
is your version of the Word of God?

Many Christians who feel instinctively that
the 'Bible' interpretation was wrong would turn
to the idea that the Word was simply Jesus Christ.
"The Word was made flesh & dwelt among us."
This is the best orthodox view.
The above 2 views are the most commonly held
interpretations of the meaning of 'Word'.

The Word, translated from the Greek 'Logos',
refers to reason, order and the principle of creation.
This in fact should be the most accurate understanding
of what the apostle John was trying to say.
John's way of expressing the origin of creation
was borrowed from early Greek philosophers
like Heraclitus, Plato & Aristotle.
'Logos' was not an orthodox Jewish way of
depicting the process of creation.
The reason why he chose this word
was perhaps because he wanted to
use this phrase to evangelise to the Greeks.

"To the Jews I became like a Jew.
To those outside the law I became one outside the law."
~~ 1 Cor 9:20,21

The apostle Paul preached to the Greeks:
"What you worship as unknown,
this I proclaim to you." ~~ Acts 17:23

In the original Genesis creation account,
God spoke the world into existence.
"Let there be light. And there was light."  ~~ Genesis 1:3
Christians interpret this God as God the Father,
or Jehovah / Yahweh.

There was no mention of Logos, or Jesus in this Genesis account.
John added Jesus and made him represent God's Voice
that spoke the Word, or rather Words.
I've always wondered about this:
Why did Jehovah need Jesus to be his voice
to create the world? He isn't dumb.
Doesn't he have his own voice?

"The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." ~~ Genesis 1:2
Christians interpret this as the Holy Spirit.

It seems that the Apostle John might have wanted to
insert Jesus into the equation both to promote the Trinitarian God
as well as to appeal to Greek philosophers,
which was a clever way of killing 2 birds with one stone.

The Gnostic Christians have an alternative understanding.
They agree that Jesus was absent from the creation
because he existed in another dimension, a dimension
far higher and more powerful than Jehovah / Yahweh.

This, of course, to many Christians, is blasphemous.
I am personally more sympathetic of the Gnostics' point of view.
However, it is difficult to understand what the Gnostics
actually believed because the majority of their teachings and books
had either been burnt or lost.

The current fragments of manuscripts that were dug up
are too obscure and vague for us to form a comprehensive doctrine.
Many scholars have tried to decipher it,
but they are just bits and pieces here and there.
Hopefully, one day, all will be revealed.

The Adventure of Living 1

This out-of-print book was written by Paul Tournier, a Swiss psychiatrist, in 1965.

Brian Mclaren has a few quotable quotes from this book but he does not delve deeply. What struck me wasn't Paul's quotes as much as 'Cory & the 7th story', a children's book written by Brian himself. It's worth a read, regardless of whether you are a Christian. The pdf file and slides are available free online.

My post will be a series of ideas based on 'The Adventure of Living',
which comprises 21 chapters.

Chapter 1
1. Every person needs an adventure to keep him going in life.

2. Discovery is followed by difficulties in improvisation, but it is fun.

3. Organisation & standardisation bring about routine, which is no longer fun.

4. When it comes to adventure, the first step is the most difficult.

5. Quality adventure supersedes quantity adventure,
which translates to more money, possessions, activities, power.

6. Many people fill their lives with a whirl of activities
as compensation for a profound dissatisfaction of the quality of life.

7. Suffering & recovering from misfortunes like illness can be seen as an adventure.

8. Woe betide those who are no longer interested in anything.

9. Crime & adultery are misguided adventures.

The Adventure of Living 2

Chapter 2:

1. Our humdrum lives are enhanced by our vivid imaginations.

2. Books, movies, festivals, sports competitions and political campaigns
immerse us in a greater adventure vicariously.

3. Parents project their own versions of great adventures onto their own children,
expecting them to fulfil ambitions and desires which they themselves
had failed to achieve, which can be negative.

4. Parenting itself can be seen as a great adventure, which can be positive.

5. The idea of doing your homework first and playing later
gives a misguided impression that work is always boring
and can never be associated with play.

6. Education should be based on a spirit of adventure.

7. Various philosophies and religions promote their
own versions of adventure to their converts.

8. Don't attempt to contradict those who have faith.
The weak ones may succumb,
but the strong ones will defend their treasure & adventure.
It would be wicked to take what is precious
away from them by sowing doubt.

The Adventure of Living 3

Chapter 3:

1. Conversion from atheism to religion or vice-versa & beliefs in political causes
are manifestations of a basic human need for adventure.

2. These convictions are based on a desire and struggle
for the truth, a just cause.

3. "Wanderlust" is a word that associates sex with adventure.

4. The instinct for adventure is the source of humanity's
greatest triumphs as well as worst catastrophes.

5. Organisations can be so well-regulated that they become impotent.

6. Political parties can be so well-balanced that no change is possible
despite the fact that no one is satisfied.

7. Revolutions in politics, religion and artistic expression all begin
with creativity & drive, but will stagnate or even decline eventually.

8. What you possess always seems less attractive than what you desire.

9. Pascal: "We never seek things themselves,
only the search for things."

10. All adventures begin with dynamic growth and magical power.
When met with resistance, the intuitive and prophetic power
gives way to rational argument, vehement defence and discussion.
This leads to dogma and formulas which kill the thrill of adventure.
They end up becoming a relic of the past in the annuls of history.

11. All movements begin in a fever of improvisation.
Success leads to systematic organisation which takes away the joy.
New, profitable enterprises sprout up for a few days
to inject enthusiasm, restore joy and allay disaster.

12. Christian movements, under the impulsion of the Holy Spirit,
become large, successful organisations.
That is when apostolic leaders become administrative servants
and there is hardly any true spiritual ministry.

13. "Reviving the flame" is not confined to Christian ministry
but applies to all endeavours. Writers lose spontaneous tide
and make it up with artificial effort.

14. It is dangerous to assume that one's golden age is behind him.
One idolises the past instead of living in the present for the future.

15. The law of adventure is that it dies as it achieves its object.

16. The spiritual life is nothing but a series of new births.
